When Clarabelle, a Naval officer preparing to transition out of the military, reached out for a portrait session, she knew exactly what she wanted: photographs that would honor her service, celebrate her career’s legacy, and include her biggest supporter—her husband, Nikolai. As a military portrait photographer based in Pensacola, I, Austen Hunter, was honored to help bring that vision to life. We chose the National Naval Aviation Museum aboard NAS Pensacola as the location for this meaningful shoot, blending military history with personal story.

A Portrait Session That Honors Service and Legacy

Photographing at the National Naval Aviation Museum gave us access to an incredible variety of aviation history—jets, helicopters, and carrier decks that echo decades of dedication and innovation. We moved between indoor exhibits and outdoor aircraft displays to create portraits that felt timeless, bold, and rooted in Clarabelle’s experience. Some frames focused on her alone in uniform, projecting strength and poise. Others highlighted the connection between her and Nikolai, whose quiet presence throughout the shoot reminded me that behind every service member is a support system that deserves recognition too.

Why Choose the National Naval Aviation Museum for Military Portraits?

Located on the grounds of Naval Air Station Pensacola, the National Naval Aviation Museum offers one of the most powerful backdrops on the Gulf Coast for military portraits. The aircraft, artifacts, and setting speak directly to the history and pride that define Navy life. For those who want their portrait session to feel personal but also connected to something larger, this location delivers. It's especially fitting for transitions—whether retirement, separation, or celebrating years of commitment in uniform—because it visually anchors the story you’ve lived.

Military Portraits Matter—Especially at Milestones

Too often, the only photos military members have in uniform are rushed, standard-issue snapshots. A professional portrait session changes that. It creates space to pause, reflect, and be captured in a way that reflects the discipline, pride, and legacy of your service. For families, it offers a tangible reminder of the sacrifices and support shared along the way. These portraits are more than images—they're heirlooms that speak for decades. Here's some of the highlights from Clarabelle's session:

The National Naval Aviation Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on Mondays and federal holidays. Public access to NAS Pensacola is available daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the West Gate on Blue Angel Parkway, but visitors must present a REAL ID or valid U.S. passport at the gate. Foreign nationals may visit but must be escorted by a U.S. citizen. Weapons of any kind—including pocket knives—are strictly prohibited, and no backpacks, coolers, drones, or alcoholic beverages are allowed. Access is also restricted for individuals with felony convictions. Because parking is limited, public entry may pause temporarily once the lots are full. All vehicles and visitors are subject to security checks, and I guide all my clients through the access process when booking sessions at the museum. For full base access rules and updates, please visit the NAS Pensacola website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can civilians visit the National Naval Aviation Museum for a photo session?

A: Yes. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors must enter through NAS Pensacola’s public access gate and present a valid government-issued ID for all adults. As your photographer, I can help coordinate access for scheduled portrait sessions.

Q: What should I wear for a military portrait session?

A: For service members, wear a clean, complete uniform with accurate insignia placement. If you're unsure about what to wear, I offer guidance in advance and can help ensure your presentation is squared away. Family members should dress in solid, neutral tones that complement the setting and avoid distracting patterns.

Q: Are there restrictions on what I can bring to the museum?

A: Yes. Weapons—including knives and pocket tools—as well as large bags are not permitted inside the museum or on base. Plan accordingly and travel light. All guests are expected to follow posted NAS Pensacola rules.

Q: How far in advance should I book my portrait session?

A: Military portrait sessions, especially at popular locations like the museum, should be booked at least 2–4 weeks in advance. This allows time for planning, outfit prep, and securing base access. Last-minute sessions may be possible, but availability can vary.

Q: Can I include my spouse or family members in the session?

A: Absolutely. Including your partner or family in your session helps tell the full story of your service and support system. Whether it's a spouse, child, or parent, these images often become the most meaningful portraits in your collection.
